Learning About Safety Ratings

Vehicle safety ratings are established by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). They test different vehicles to see how they perform under different circumstances and assign a rating so that drivers know how relatively safe they are or not.

The NHTSA performs crash tests on vehicles and assigns the worst ones a one-star rating and the best ones a five-star rating. It evaluates front and side impacts as well as how likely the car is to roll over. The IIHS performs five crash tests on vehicles and rates them as either poor, marginal, acceptable or good. It awards cars as a Top Safety Pick or a Top Safety Pick+ for meeting the highest safety standards in crash tests.
